CAT'S LOVER CARE

#How to Care for a Pet Cat

Read on for useful tips for new cat parents, and for those looking to brush up on their pet care skills.

Step 1: Feeding

We recommend purchasing high-quality, brand-name kitten or cat food. Your veterinarian will be able to assess your new cat or kitten and determine the best diet. Factors such as age, activity level and health make a difference in what and how much a cat should eat.

  • Cats require taurine, an essential amino acid, for heart and eye health.

  • You will need to provide fresh, clean water at all times, and wash and refill your cat’s water bowls daily.

  • Treats should be no more than 5-10% of the diet.

  • Take your pet to your veterinarian if signs of anorexia, diarrhea, vomiting or lethargy continue for more than two days.

Step 2: Grooming

Most cats stay relatively clean and rarely need a bath, but you should brush or comb your cat regularly. Frequent brushing helps keep your cat's coat clean, reduces the amount of shedding and cuts down on the incidence of hairballs.

Step 3: Handling

To pick up your cat, place one hand behind the front legs and another under the hindquarters. Lift gently. Never pick up a cat by the scruff of the neck or by the front legs.

Step 4: Housing

Your pet should have her own clean, dry place in your home to sleep and rest. Line your cat's bed with a soft, warm blanket or towel. Be sure to wash the bedding often. Please keep your cat indoors.  Outdoor cats are more likely to become infested with fleas or ticks, as well as contract infectious diseases.

Step 5: Identification

If allowed outdoors, your cat must wear a safety collar and an ID tag. A safety collar with an elastic panel will allow your cat to break loose if the collar gets caught on something.

Step 6: Litter Box

All indoor cats need a litter box, which should be placed in a quiet, accessible location. In a multi-level home, one box per floor is recommended. Avoid moving the box unless absolutely necessary, but if you must do so, move the box just a few inches per day. Keep in mind that cats won't use a messy, smelly litter box, so scoop solid wastes out of the box at least once a day. Dump everything, wash with a mild detergent and refill at least once a week; you can do this less frequently if using clumping litter. Don't use ammonia, deodorants or scents, especially lemon, when cleaning the litter box. If your cat will not use a litterbox, please consult with your veterinarian.

Step 7: Health

Your cat should see the veterinarian at least once a year for an examination and annual shots, and immediately if she is sick or injured.

Medicines and Poisons

Never give your cat medication that has not been prescribed by a veterinarian.

Rabbit's Lover Care

#How to Care for a Pet Rabbit

Rabbits are unique pets. They have specific needs in order to live a long, happy and healthy life. Here is a basic overview on how to care for a pet rabbit:

Step 1: Set Up Safe Indoor Housing

There are several options to house rabbits inside. They can live free-reign in a bunny proofed room/rooms, or they can be contained within a puppy pen, bunny condo, or large rabbit cage.  If contained, their space should always be large enough so they can hop around, and they should be let out of their pen for at least a few hours everyday for exercise.

Step 2: Bunny Proof Your House

Rabbits need space to run around and explore. In order to create a safe space for your bunny and to protect your belongings, you will need to thoroughly bunny proof the area. This includes covering all wires with plastic sleeves or flex tubing, or lifting them 3-4 feet out of reach of your rabbit.

Step 3: Provide Fresh Hay

A rabbit’s diet should mainly consist of hay.  Fresh hay should be provided to rabbits at all times. Baby rabbits should be given alfalfa, and adult rabbits should be fed timothy hay, grass hay, or oat hay. Using a large hay feeder is helpful because it keeps large amounts of hay dry, clean, and accessible.

Step 4: Provide Fresh Greens, Fiber-rich Pellets, and Fresh Water

Supplement your rabbit’s hay with fresh vegetables, fiber-rich pellets (in limited quantities for adult rabbits), and fresh water daily.

Step 5: Set Up a Litter Box

Rabbits have a natural inclination to poop and pee in one area.  Take advantage of this by setting up a medium-sized cat litter box or shallow storage bin near their food/water bowls and hay feeder.

Step 6: Groom Your Rabbit

Rabbits are naturally clean animals and wash themselves frequently. But you still need to groom your rabbit on a regular basis. Rabbits go through shedding cycles a couple times a year. It’s important to brush your rabbit to remove all the excess fur. Otherwise, your rabbit could ingest it and have serious digestive issues.

HAMSTER'S LOVER CARE

#How to Care for a Pet Rabbit Hamster

**Hamster Facts

Average Adult Size4 to 5 inches long

Average Life Spanup to 2 to 3 years with proper care

Dietomnivore

Step 1: Diet

A well-balanced hamster diet consists of:

  • High-quality hamster lab blocks and limited amounts of grains, vegetables, fruits and Timothy hay.

  • Clean, fresh, filtered, chlorine-free water, changed daily.

  • Do not feed chocolate, caffeine or alcohol as these can cause serious medical conditions. Avoid sugar and high fat treats.

Step 2: Feeding

Things to remember when feeding your hamster:

  • Fresh food and water should always be available.

  • A limited amount of grain, vegetables, fruits or Timothy hay can be given daily but should not exceed 10% of their total diet

  • Vegetables and fruits not eaten within 24 hours should be discarded.

Step 3: Housing

  • Hamsters acclimate well to average household temperatures, not to exceed 80°F; be cautious of extreme temperature changes. The habitat should never be in direct sunlight or in a drafty area.

  • Habitat should be plastic, metal or glass and escapeproof with a solid bottom; there should be plenty of room for the hamster to exercise and play. It is best to provide the largest habitat possible.

  • 1-2" of bedding should be placed in the habitat; proper bedding includes high quality paper bedding, crumbled paper bedding, or hardwood shavings. Cedar-based products are not recommended.

  • House adult hamsters separately. Different types of small animals should not be housed together.

Step 4: Normal Behavior

  • Play during the night and rest during the day (nocturnal) but can adjust to your schedule.

  • Easy to handle but may nip if suddenly awakened from a nap or startled.

  • Chew on objects to maintain incisor teeth, which grow continuously; ensure they have plenty of wood chew sticks or mineral chews.

Step 5: Habitat Maintenance

  • Clean and disinfect the habitat and its contents at least once a week with a 3% bleach solution. Rinse and allow to dry completely before placing the hamster back into the habitat.

  • Remove wet spots daily; change bedding at least once a week, or more often as necessary.

Step 6: Grooming & Hygiene

  • Hamsters stay clean and rarely need baths, but can be spot-cleaned with a damp washcloth or unscented baby wipes if needed. Some hamsters enjoy an occasional dust bath. Hairless hamsters benefit from a small amount of non-toxic aloe-based lotion rubbed into their skin to keep it soft.

  • It is normal for a hamster's teeth to be yellow; cleaning is not necessary.

  • Consult with a veterinarian if a hamster's teeth seem too long.

Step 7: Health

Signs of a Healthy Animal

  • Active, alert, and sociable

  • Eats and drinks regularly

  • Healthy fur and clear eyes

  • Breathing is unlabored

  • Walks normally

Red Flags

  • weight loss

  • abnormal hair loss

  • diarrhea or dirty bottom

  • distressed breathing

  • lethargic

  • eye or nasal discharge
